It's like changing the types of tubes anywhere from a weak 12AU7 to a blistering 12AT7. Each unit is hand built to my specs and I personally check out each Tube Driver to perfection. Due to the continuing requests for my limited production original design Tube Driver pedal, here are the details: I'm hand building. Are you sure that 12AT7 you have is a proper functioning one ? A 12AU7 will make it sound even smoother, though all of that doesn't matter a whole lot if you use it as a clean preamp. If anything, a 12AT7 in a Tube Driver - or any starved plate situation - should make the sound smoother than with a 12AX7. My gain settings are between 11 o'clock and noon. Suggested Tube Driver settings: Volume 9-10 o'clock, all eq knobs to "0", and gain to taste. I get a way better violin tone when my Vox wah is in my chain (really helps mellow the sound). When I set my Real Tube to sound the same as my 1980s or 2007 Tube Driver, I can barely hear any difference in a blind sound comparison. As with the 4 knob versions, if you want a smoother low gain sound out of the Real Tube, simply change the stock 12AX7 tube a lower gain tube like a 12AU7 or 12AT7. The bias knob allows you to reduce the gain, similar to what would be accomplished by changing to a lower gain tube like the 12AU7.

In 2008 Butler added began offering a Bias control option, something he offered on the very first Tube Drivers in the 1980s.
